Before we jump into LinkedIn, I wanted to introduce a new way of thinking when it comes to social media.

Planning how to use social media to support your business is like creating the blueprint to your dream home.  It’s essential to design your dream home right so it suits your preferences and needs.

Similarly, you can think about your social media the same way – there are people you want to attract and interact with on each platform.  That means you need custom designed and inviting places where they feel comfortable connecting and engaging with you online.

Each social media platform has its own culture, best practices, and purpose.  Think of each platform you use as a different room in your dream home that you need to plan and design for its specific purpose.

With that being said, you need to know who you are attracting on each platform.  Knowing who your ideal client is, or your target market will guide you when it comes time to focus on a particular social media platform.

This week, I am going to talk about LinkedIn, so let’s get started!

LinkedIn is the most overlooked social media network with more than 500 million members in over 200 countries and territories.  In the US alone, there are over 122 million members.

You want to use LinkedIn to demonstrate your expertise and show your audience that you are the expert in your field.  Show people what makes you different than your competition by setting yourself apart.

Don’t think of LinkedIn as a resume – instead, think of it as an inbound marketing tool where you can tell your story.

Don’t think of it as a primary job hunting or recruiting tool – think of it as a great tool for marketing, finding leads, and growing your business.

Having your LinkedIn profile 100% complete will help you get found, not only on LinkedIn but on Google.

If your profile isn’t 100% complete, that shows a lack of credibility and professionalism.  With first impressions going a long way, it’s important you get yours right the first time.

Here are some great statistics:

  • Started in the living room of one of the co-founders in 2002 and launched on May 5, 2003
  • Microsoft paid $26.2 billion to buy LinkedIn
  • There are more than 500 million members with two new members per second
  • 40 million students and recent college graduates are on LinkedIn – the fastest growing demographic
  • 56% of users are men and 44% are women
  • 44% of LinkedIn users earn more than $75,000 in a year
  • Members are sharing insights and knowledge in more than 2.1 million LinkedIn Groups
  • 57% of all LinkedIn traffic comes from mobile devices
  • 40% of users check LinkedIn daily and spend an average of 17 minutes per month
  • 94% of B2B marketers use LinkedIn to distribute content
  • 50% of B2B buyers use LinkedIn when making purchasing decisions
  • 1 million people have published posts on LinkedIn, sharing over 130,000 posts each week
  • Posts with images receive 200% more engagement than text-only posts
  • 98% of posts with images receive more comments than text-only posts
  • Posts with links have 20% higher engagement
  • People with a profile picture receive 21 times more profile views and drives higher overall engagement
