As you know, social media is always changing, whether it’s the algorithm, format, layout, style, and of course, image sizes.

Just when you feel comfortable, updates are made.

Below is an essential list of social media image sizes. You can also download the cheat sheet here.

2020 Social Media Image Size Cheat Sheet

Facebook

Cover Photo: 820 x 312 px

  • Appears on page at 820 x 312 pixels, anything less will be stretched
  • Minimum size should be 400 x 150 pixels
  • Displays at 820 x 312 pixels on desktop 640 x 360 pixels on smartphones – does not display on feature phones
  • For best results, upload an RGB JPG file less than 100KB
  • If your cover photo has a logo or text, upload your image as a PNG file
  • Business Page dimensions are exactly the same as personal accounts

Profile Image: 180 x 180 px

On a personal account, your profile image overlaps with your cover photo. On a business account, your profile image showcases to the left of your cover photo.

Personal Page

  • Must be at least 180 x 180 pixels, but your photo will appear on page as 170 x 170 pixels
  • Photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 pixels
  • It will show as 128 x 128 pixels on smartphones
  • Profile pictures are located 16 pixels from the left and 176 pixels from the top of your cover photo on desktop
  • Profile pictures are located 24 pixels from the left, 24 pixels from the bottom and 196 pixels from the top of your cover photo on smartphones

Business Page

  • Must be at least 180 x 180 pixels
  • Photo will appear on page as 170 x 170 pixels on desktop, 128 x 128 on smartphones, and 36 x 36 on most feature phones
  • Photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 pixels
  • Business Page images will be cropped to fit a square

Shared Images: 1200 x 630 px

A shared image is one of the most common forms of sharing on Facebook

  • Recommended upload size is 1200 x 630 pixels
  • Will appear in feed at a max width of 470 pixels
  • Will appear on page at a max width of 504 pixels

Shared Link: 1200 x 628 px

  • Recommended upload size of 1200 x 628 pixels
  • Square Photo minimum 154 x 154 pixels in feed
  • Square Photo minimum 116 x 116 pixels on page
  • Rectangular Photo minimum 470 x 246 pixels in feed
  • Rectangular Photo minimum 484 x 252 pixels on page
  • Facebook will scale photos under the minimum dimensions
  • For better results, increase image resolution at the same scale as the minimum size

Highlighted Image: 1200 x 717 px

A highlight is a milestone that you can create. This image is going to be kept on your personal timeline, but it’s going to take up a lot more space than a shared link or image.

  • Will appear on your page at 843 x 504 pixels
  • Choose a higher resolution at the scale for better quality

Event Image: 1920 x 1080 px

  • Facebook will scale down to minimum dimensions of 470 x 174 pixels
  • Shows in feed at 470 x 174 pixels

LinkedIn

Personal Profile Image: 400 x 400 px

  • Recommended between 400 x 400 pixels
  • Minimum 200 x 200 pixels
  • Maximum file size 10MB
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Personal Background Image: 1584 x 396 px
This is a newer feature and can be a bit tricky to find something that really fits that space well. If you get it right, your profile will look great.

  • Recommended 1584 x 396 pixels
  • Maximum size of 4MB
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Company Logo Image: 300 x 300 px
One of the two brand logos that you should be uploading to LinkedIn is the standard company logo. This is the bigger of the two and is going to show up right next to your brand name on your LinkedIn homepage. This image also appears in the “Companies you may want to follow” section. The more enticing the photo, the more likely you’ll gain followers.

  • Recommended 300 x 300 pixels
  • Minimum 300 x 300 pixels
  • Maximum 4MB square layout
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Square Logo: 60 x 60 px
This is the brand image that shows up when your company is searched. Make sure you use something recognizable to your brand let customers know which company is yours.

  • 60 x 60 pixels – resized to fit
  • Maximum 2MB
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Company Cover Image: 1536 x 768 px
Unlike the personal background image, the company or standard business background image covers the entire top of the page. The image appears much larger than the personal dimensions, giving businesses a bit more space.

  • Recommended between 1536 x 768 pixels
  • Minimum size 1192 x 220 pixels
  • Maximum 4MB
  • Appears as 1400 x 245 pixels
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Banner Image for Company Page: 646 x 220 px
The banner image is one of the newest and most prominent of the images that you can use on LinkedIn. This image appears when a user visits your brand’s homepage. Since this image is located on your homepage it’s likely the visitor is actively searching for your brand, so use this opportunity to reel them in with a great image.

  • Minimum 646 x 220 pixels
  • Maximum 2MB
  • Landscape layout
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Hero Image: 1128 x 376 px
At the top of this page sits a banner that is bigger than any of the other images on LinkedIn. You can use this space to choose a picture that speaks to your company in order to attract some great potential employees.

  • Recommended 1128 x 276 pixels
  • Minimum 1128 x 376 pixels
  • Maximum 2MB
  • Landscape layout
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG
  • The display size can vary between desktop and mobile, so it’s best to test out a few different configurations of your image

Shared Image or Link: 1104 x 736 px
This size works for LinkedIn posts that share a photo or a link with image to a blog post or article.  If you’re only sharing a photo, you have a bit more room for the maximum size if you prefer.

  • Recommended size for images or links 1104 x 736 pixels
  • Appears at 552 x 289 pixels
  • Maximum size for shared images only 1104 x 736
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Instagram

Profile Picture: 110 x 110 px

  • Appears on your phone at 110 x 110 pixels
  • Square photo – make sure to maintain an aspect ratio of 1:1

Profile Thumbnails: 161 x 161 px

  • Appears on your page at 161 x 161 pixels
  • Square photo – make sure to maintain an aspect ratio of 1:1

Photo Size: 1080 x 1080 px

  • The size has been increased to 1080 x 1080 pixels
  • Scales down to 612 x 612 pixels
  • Appears in feed at 510 x 510 pixels
  • Square or rectangle photos – maintain an aspect ratio between 1:91 and 4:5
  • For portrait photos, recommended dimensions are 1080 x 1350 pixels – ratio of 4:5
  • Smaller featured header images appear as 204 x 204 pixels and larger featured header images appear as 409 x 409 pixels

Stories: 1080 x 1920 px
With more than 300 million daily users, Instagram Stories are a popular source of visuals on the app. There are both video and image options available to publish. And while this feature is meant to be only last 24 hours, it’s possible to upload your own content.

  • Recommended resolution is 1080 x 1920
  • Minimum resolution is 600 x 1067
  • Aspect ratio is 9:16
  • Max file size is 4GB

Twitter

Header Photo: 1500 x 500 px

  • Recommended 1500 x 500 pixels
  • Maximum file size is 5MB
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

Profile Photo: 400 x 400 px

  • Square image – recommended 400 x 400 pixels
  • Displays at 200 x 200
  • Maximum file size 100KB
  • Image types include JPG, GIF or PNG

In-Stream Photo: 440 x 220 px
Uploaded photos will appear in your followers’ streams and the streams of their followers (if Retweeted). It’s important to note that Twitter may collapse your photo into a smaller version to fit in a user’s stream. Make sure Twitter displays the portion of the photo you want followers to see by setting the width of your image to fit the minimum requirements. Also, horizontally center your content so the most important elements of the image are visible in the collapsed version.

  • Minimum to appear expanded 440 x 220 pixels – ratio of 2:1
  • Recommended aspect ratio is 16:9
  • Maximum to appear expanded 1024 x 512 pixels
  • appears in stream collapsed at 506 x 253 pixels on desktop
  • Can tweet up to 4 images at a time
  • Maximum file size is 5MB for photos, 5MB for animated GIFs on mobile and 15MB on web

Pinterest

Profile Picture: 165 x 165 px

  • Appears at 165 x 165 pixels on home page
  • Appears at 32 x 32 pixels on the rest of Pinterest
  • Maximum 10MB
  • Image types include JPG or PNG

Pin Sizes:
When adding a pin to your board, it’s important to remember that Pinterest puts a limit on the width of the image but not the length.

  • Pins on main page appear as 236 pixels – height is scaled
  • Pins on a board appear as 236 pixels – height is scaled
  • Expanded pins have a minimum width of 600 pixels – height is scaled

Board Display:
Creating boards is one of the most important things that you can do on Pinterest. Not only is it important to choose a photo that is enticing to your audience, it’s important to choose one that’s relevant to that particular board.

  • 222 x 150 pixels – large thumbnail
  • 55 x 55 – smaller thumbnail

YouTube

Channel Profile Image: 800 x 800 px

  • Recommended 800 x 800 pixels
  • Displays as 98 x 98 pixels
  • Image types include JPG, GIF, PNG or BMP

Channel Cover Photo: 2560 x 1440 px
There are a lot of different platforms and devices that users can stream YouTube on so it’s important that your brand has a photo optimized for each one.

  • Recommended 2560 x 1440 pixels
  • Safe area for mobile and web (without text and logo cropping) 1546 x 423 pixels
  • Maximum file size 4MB
  • Image types include JPG, GIF, PNG or BMP
  • Tablet display 1855 x 423
  • Mobile display 1546 x 423
  • TV display 2560 x 1440
  • Desktop 2560 x 423 (1546 x 423 pixels are always visible). Flexible Area (may be visible): 507 pixels to the left and 507 pixels to the right of the safe area.

Video Uploads: 1280 x 720

  • Videos must maintain a 16:0 aspect ratio
  • In order to qualify as full HD, your dimensions must be at least 1280 x 720 pixels
