Sharing your story wasn’t always something I felt comfortable doing.
For a long time, I believed people only wanted to know what I did, not the story behind why I do it. Like many women entrepreneurs, I thought I needed to keep my personal life and my business completely separate. I worried that if I shared too much, people would lose sight of my work instead of seeing the value I could offer.
Over the years, I’ve shared parts of my own journey online….from becoming a breast cancer survivor to walking alongside my mom through Alzheimer’s before she passed away. Those moments weren’t easy to live through, and they certainly weren’t easy to talk about. But each time I shared a piece of my story, something unexpected happened.
People reached out. Some left comments. Others sent private messages. Many simply said, “Me too.”
In those two little words, I realized I wasn’t just sharing my experiences. I was helping someone else feel less alone.
That’s when I truly understood something….People connect with people before they connect with businesses.

Your Story Is Part of Your Brand
When we think about building a business, it’s easy to believe our experience, education, or services are what make us stand out. Those things certainly matter, but they aren’t the whole picture.
The way you’ve overcome challenges, the lessons you’ve learned, and the reasons you care so deeply about the work you do are just as important. Those experiences shape how you serve your clients and how you show up every day.
No one else has lived your life or has your perspective.
That’s what makes your story worth sharing!
You Don’t Have to Share Everything
One of the biggest misconceptions about storytelling is that you have to tell your whole life story.
You don’t!
Sharing your story isn’t about revealing every personal detail. It’s about choosing the moments that have shaped you and asking yourself whether they might encourage, inspire, or help someone else.
Sometimes that story is about a challenge you’ve overcome, a mistake that taught you an important lesson, or simply sharing why you started your business in the first place.
The goal isn’t to make yourself the center of attention. The goal is to make someone else feel seen.
What This Looks Like on LinkedIn
One of the reasons I love LinkedIn is because it gives us the opportunity to be both professional and personal.
People often think LinkedIn is only a place for resumes, job titles, and accomplishments. But the posts that stay with me are usually the ones where someone shares a lesson they learned, a challenge they faced, or a moment that changed their perspective.
Those stories remind us that there are real human beings behind every profile.
The next time you’re thinking about what to post, don’t start with, “What should I promote today?”
Instead, ask yourself….”What have I experienced that could help someone else?”
That one question can completely change the way you show up online.
Your Story Doesn’t Have to Be Extraordinary
Sometimes we convince ourselves that our story isn’t interesting enough because it doesn’t feel dramatic.
But meaningful stories aren’t always the biggest ones.
They’re often the everyday moments that teach us something about ourselves, our business, or the people we serve.
Never underestimate the impact of sharing a lesson you’ve learned or a moment that changed the way you think.
You never know who needs to hear it.
One Small Step You Can Take Today
Think about one experience that has shaped the way you run your business.
It doesn’t have to be life changing. It simply needs to be meaningful to you.
Write down what happened, what you learned, and how it might encourage someone else.
You don’t have to publish it today. Just start writing.
You may discover that the story you’ve been hesitant to tell is the one someone has been waiting to hear.
❤️ A Little Encouragement Before You Go….
Your story is one of the few things no one else can copy. It’s woven into who you are, how you serve others, and why you care so deeply about the work you do. Don’t be afraid to let people see the heart behind your business. The right people won’t connect with you because your story is perfect….they’ll connect with you because it’s real!
